Peacemaking vs. Winning | Citizen Podcast | EP3

Johnson Ferry October 29, 2024 7:00 am

The word politics is typically used as a term of power and is primarily viewed negatively. How do we approach politics as Christians with dual citizenship?

Verses // Matthew 5:3-6, Matthew 5:20, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Matthew 6:1, Romans 13, Matthew 22, Matthew 6:6, Isaiah 55:1-3

Discussion Questions:
1. Today, we talked about hunger. A fun opening question: You have one last meal to eat. What is it and why?
2. What does it look like to hunger for God? Why are we not told to hunger for happiness?
3. Why does Jesus want us to hunger for righteousness? Compare this with what he said of the Pharisees in Matthew 5:20.
4. The Bible doesn’t tell us much (if anything) about political elections. In what ways should our personal righteousness affect our public desire for righteousness?
5. How do we rightly determine the limits of our answer to question 4; recognizing both that our world is broken and that sinners are unable to fulfill God’s will apart from God’s supernatural work and salvation.

Discussion Questions:
1. Describe a valuable life lesson that you had to learn the hard way.
2. It took Daniel courage to tell King Nebuchadnezzar the truth. How does this relate to the courage needed to speak God’s truth into our world today?
3. If you knew what hardships you were going to face, how do you think you would approach God differently?
4. Nebuchadnezzar was punished because of his pride. In what ways have you seen pride function as a destructive force in your life (or the life of someone you know)?
5. What lessons does Chapter 4 teach us about God’s sovereignty over kingdoms and rulers? In what ways does this help us to think through our own political struggles in America?

2. Daniel’s first response to the crisis is to seek the Lord and pray. How has prayer helped you recently in a time of need/crisis?
3. Daniel’s statements of praise in Daniel 2:19-23 remind us about God’s power and sovereignty. What truth revealed in these verses is particularly comforting to you and why?
4. What does it mean to say, “God reigns over history?”
5. What is your biggest takeaway from reading/hearing Daniel 2. Discuss.

Discussion Questions:
1. What is a current trial you are facing (particularly one that you did not ask for)?
2. What is our normal first response to trials? How did Jehoshaphat first respond to his trial (v. 1-4)? What is instructive about his response?
3. Jehoshaphat’s temple prayer in v. 5-12 is based off of Solomon’s dedication prayer in 2 Chronicles 6. What does this tell us about the connection between what God promises and what God does?
4. What is encouraging to you about the thought, “for the battle is not yours but God’s” (v. 15)?
5. How do worship, prayer, and praise help us when we go through difficult times?
6. How does this story in 2 Chronicles point to Jesus Christ? What comfort do we take, specifically as Christians, from this story about Israel in the Old Testament?

4. What is the difference between the community as the world sees it and the kind of community and fellowship portrayed in the Scriptures (e.g., Acts 2:42-47)?
5. We challenged everyone to take the next step to “belong” at Johnson Ferry? What might your next step be in this area of discipleship?

Discussion Questions:
1. Paul uses many athletic images to speak of how he followed Jesus. How does this help us evaluate our own walk with Jesus?
2. What are practical ways we can all “share the word” in our world today? How do we keep the urgency to do so when it seems inconvenient.
3. What are some of the ways that Christians today have “itching ears”?
4. Paul mentions both friends and foes in this passage. Why is it important to have Christian community? In what ways can Christian community be hard?
5. Paul fulfilled his purpose. Do you live with a strong sense of purpose from God? Why or why not?

1. Talk about a time when you learned a life lesson from an experience in your past. What happened? What did you learn?
2. In what ways was Paul the perfect candidate to receive a commission to reach the Gentiles for Christ?
3. Reread Philippians 3:1-11. What does it mean to consider all of his religious pedigree as “loss”?
4. Paul finished his life well. What advice would you give about how to do the same (especially to someone who might be struggling with past regrets and shame)?

Discussion Questions:
1. Think about a time when you went through pain. While keeping their names anonymous, what did people do/say that was helpful to you? What did they say/do that was hurtful?
2. In your opinion, why do many people struggle to help others when they are grieving?
3. Name someone in your life who is a good listener. What do they do that makes them a good listener?
4. What are specific, helpful ways to show love to someone who is going through a hard time?
5. Take time to pray—as a group—for people you know who are hurting. Then, put together a plan of action to minister to them this week.

2. The Bible starts with the Garden of Eden and ends with the “Garden” of the New Heavens and Earth (Revelation 21-22). In what ways does a “garden” teach us about where the world began and where it is headed?
3. What lessons do we learn from the two criminals? In what ways do we see ourselves in both of these criminals?
4. What is significant about Jesus saying, “Today you will be with me in paradise”? What does this teach us about heaven and how to get there?
5. According to Romans 12:1, we are to live in light of God’s mercy. What are the practical ways that God’s mercy influences how we make decisions and how we treat people?

As we continue our journey to Easter, Pastor Clay examines the idea of true Salvation and looks toward scripture to answer the questions “What is paradise?” and “Who is paradise for?”

1. Have you ever felt abandoned? What happened, and how did you handle it?
2. What is the connection between what Jesus says in Matthew 27 and what is written in Psalm 22?
3. We gave four interpretations of what Jesus meant by this cry. Which one seems to best fit the overall teaching of Scripture?
4. Why did Jesus have to be forsaken/abandoned? What was taking place in this moment that made this necessary?
5. How does reflecting on the cross shape how you live for Christ on a daily basis?

Discussion Questions:
1. On the cross, Jesus is fully God and fully man. What does Jesus’ thirst reveal about his true humanity, and why is that important?
2. Jesus obeyed and fulfilled Scripture. What role should obeying Scripture play in our daily walk with Jesus?
3. Jesus often spoke of His ability to quench the thirst of those who are thirsty (See John 4:14; 6:35; 7:37). What is Jesus talking about when he says we “thirst”? What are modern-day examples of people “thirsting for God”?
4. In what way has focusing on Jesus’ death on the cross helped you draw closer to God?
5. Today, we prayed for people who do not follow Jesus to be saved and to come to know him. Who did you pray for today, and what might you do this week to help that person take the next step toward Jesus?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS //
1. Why is it so important to think of disciple-making as a product of our intimacy with Jesus instead of a list of things to do for God?
2. 2 Timothy 2:2 is a classic disciple-making verse. What does it teach us about how we should disciple others?
3. Paul uses 3 analogies for how we should approach the ministry we do with/for God. What are they, and what do they teach us?
4. We listed 5 reasons why most of us do not make disciples? Which of the five most resonates with you? Is there an additional reason you might add to the list?
5. What do you sense the Holy Spirit wants you to do with what you’ve heard/discussed today?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS //
1. In what ways do you see our culture struggling with apathy?
2. Jesus uses vivid imagery of “vomiting” in Rev. 3:15-16. What was He trying to get across to them by using this illustration?
