When you hear the phrase "start back," do you get excited or depressed? Do you have visions of something pleasurable or nightmares of drudgery? Maybe the phrase reminds you of a diet or exercise plan that you must start back. But, if you are a parent, you get excited because school is starting back in August! As lovely as it was to have some time off this summer, special needs families are ready to jump back into a routine because our kids thrive better, right? They seem to flourish in structure. They know what to expect in their daily lives. The structure is not boring but helpful.
We can use structure in our spiritual lives, as well. We can plan a daily time to read our Bible and pray. Participating in a group Bible study can be exciting and help us grow in our spiritual walk. Also, we can be more consistent in our church attendance. Good habits are more apt to happen when we are in a routine. Use structure to find God's truth for your life. Think about this verse in I Thessalonians 2:13, "And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as what it really is, the word of God which is at work in you believers." As we get ready to begin a new church year, start back with some good habits and get into God's Word.
Check out ways you and your family can plug into church this fall. Is there a program that could help your family grow in their faith? Check out all the Shine activities offered in the Parents' Corner, especially the Fall Family Retreat. (check out the huge discount we just took off the price!) It could be just what your family needs to start a great year. Let God's Word be "the lamp to your feet and the light to your path" (Psalm 119:105) that you need this fall.
I look forward to seeing everyone back at church this month!

Rise Coffee & Tea
Rise Coffee & Tea provides a bigger stage for people with special needs to SHINE!
As a mother of 4 children, 2 with special needs, I’ve always put my family first. That means taking care of myself and enjoying my career because that helps me be the best Mom I can be! My heart for wellness developed over many years. SHINE Health & Wellness was created in 2013 with a focus on fitness, nutrition, and therapy. Seven years later, seeing the need for meaning and purpose through work for my kids, I felt called to open a coffee shop connected to the wellness center. This coffee shop provides jobs for people with special needs, like my kids, and for neurotypical people to buddy and come alongside them. RISE Coffee & Tea opened in March 2020, as the pandemic hit the US. Covid-19 was a challenging time for both the wellness center and the new coffee shop, but God provided what we needed every step. RISE also proved to be a low barrier entrance to wellness for our community as a public place connected to our private wellness center. RISE & SHINE stands out in our community because it is a place where everybody knows your name, and you belong. You have a place. You are seen. You have value. Our heart is to be a light in our community of hope and health. We’ve overcome many challenges as we constantly pivot to keep moving forward. Unlike any other coffee shop, our coffee shop boasts healthy drinks, treats, and protein smoothies. All our products are baked in-house and gluten free, we are raising the standard in this market.
Be sure to stop for a cup of coffee or tea and a nutritious and delicious healthy treat. Once you finish relaxing with your drink, go next door and check out Shine Wellness Special Friends because it is always a great time to get healthy and fit.
