Qualifications for Deacons

  1. Definition of a deacon:
    One who ministers or one who serves.
  2. Who can nominate deacons:
    Any member of Johnson Ferry may nominate up to 50 qualified members for the office of deacon, term to begin January 2012. Fifty (50) new deacons will be selected, keeping the total number of deacons to approximately 150. A list of nominees will be presented to the church for affirmation by the Deacon Nominating Committee at a later date.
  3. Biblical Qualifications for a deacon: based on passages from Acts 6:3-8 and I Timothy 3:8-13:
    1. Men of dignity: (I Timothy 3:8, Acts 6:3)
      Those whose reputation inside and outside the church is beyond reproach.
    2. Integrity: (1 Timothy 3:8)
      Those who are not double-tongued, but honest in speech.
    3. Proven spiritual maturity: (Acts 6:3, I Timothy 3:12)
      Those who are full of the Holy Spirit and full of wisdom; men who have been tested in their faith.
    4. If married, dedicated to his family: (I Timothy 3:12)
      Let Deacons be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.
    5. Temperate: (I Timothy 3:3)
      Those who are temperate in all areas of lifestyle and who are not addicted to much wine.
    6. Good steward of possessions: (I Timothy 3:8)
      Those who are not fond of sordid gain nor greedy for money. They should be tithers, as a minimum.
    7. Faithfulness to biblical doctrines of the Christian faith: (I Timothy 3:9)
      But holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
