Depression

Everyone feels blue from time to time, but equating depression with the blues is like saying that a common cold is the same as pneumonia. The blues are usually in reaction to disappointment or an upsetting event, or sometimes in reaction to something as simple as a rainy day, but they last only a day or two. Depression, on the other hand, can last a lifetime, and the illness is much more pervasive and disabling.

Many well meaning Christians assume that all depression is spiritual in nature. While it is possible that some depression has a spiritual origin, it is also a very real medical condition that cannot be willed away any more than heart disease or diabetes can. This type of depression requires medical treatment. Applying only spiritual remedies to a physical condition can actually worsen the problem and lead to chronic depression. Left untreated, depression is like a cancer and is a potentially fatal disease – and suicide could be the end result of waiting for it to go away without any help.

If you suspect you or someone you love may suffer from depression, seek help today. Don’t wait until the symptoms become progressively worse and debilitating.
